WOMEN'S CRAFT COOPERATIVE;
Since 1974 poor and homeless women have found an oasis of hope and nourishment at Rosie’s Place. The mission of Rosie’s Place, located in downtown Boston, is to help women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives. Rosie’s Place was the first shelter for women in the US.
The Women's Craft Cooperative a micro-enterprise within Rosie's Place began in 1996 helping women help themselves by turning new and vintage buttons into the highest quality jewelry and accessories. Buttons are a metaphor for connecting, something they always strive to do at Rosie’s Place.
Through introducing women to craft skills and the basics of merchandising, the cooperative fosters self-esteem and creativity, along with employable skills, a greater earning potential, and a source of income to the artisans.
Elizabeth, a WCC employee since 1999 says, “It gives me a reason to get up in the morning and do things.” By treating each woman with respect and by offering unconditional love and support, Rosie's Place builds trusting relationships with guests and helps them realize their dreams.
The Women’s Craft Cooperative began with one signature item – the button pin. Today, the product line includes bookmarks, barrettes, cuff links, magnets, and bracelets in standardized or one-of-a-kind designs.
